Switchboard Upgrades Melbourne

If your switchboard still runs ceramic fuses, trips whenever the kettle and heater are on together, or has no safety switches at all, it is doing less to protect the house than you think. We replace ageing boards with modern circuit breakers and RCDs, sized properly for how your home actually uses power now.

Switchboard Upgrades: what’s included

  • Ceramic fuse boards replaced with modern circuit breakers
  • Safety switches (RCDs) fitted to power and lighting circuits
  • Boards resized for air conditioning, EV charging and solar
  • Nuisance tripping traced and resolved, not just reset

Signs your switchboard needs upgrading

Ceramic or rewireable fuses are the clearest sign: they were the standard decades ago and offer no protection against electric shock, only against overload. No safety switches, or a single safety switch covering the whole house, is another. Breakers that trip when you run the dryer and the oven together, lights that dim when the air conditioner starts, or a board with scorch marks, buzzing or a burning smell all mean it should be looked at soon rather than later.

Older homes across Melbourne, particularly in the north-west, are also being asked to do far more than their boards were built for: split systems, induction cooktops, EV chargers and solar were not on the list in 1975.

What a switchboard upgrade includes

We replace the old board with a modern enclosure, fit circuit breakers for each circuit, and add RCD protection so that a fault to earth trips the power in milliseconds. We check the main switch and mains connections, label every circuit clearly, and test everything before we leave. You receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety, as required for this work in Victoria.

Where it makes sense we will suggest surge protection, spare capacity for an EV charger or air conditioner you are planning, or separating circuits that are currently sharing one breaker. We quote the lot as a fixed price before starting.

Safety switches and current standards

Current wiring rules require safety switch protection on power and lighting circuits in homes. A board with breakers but no RCDs will still trip on an overload, but it will not protect a person who touches a live conductor. Bringing an older board up to that standard is the single most effective safety improvement you can make to a house.

Switchboard Upgrades: common questions

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in Melbourne?

It depends on the size of the board, the number of circuits and the condition of the existing wiring, which is why we do not publish a single figure. Send a photo of the board with the cover open and we will give you a fixed quote within 2 hours.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Most residential upgrades are completed in a day. Power is off for part of that time, and we tell you how long before we start.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade for solar or an EV charger?

Often, yes. Both add a significant load or a new circuit, and older boards frequently have no room or no RCD protection. We assess this as part of any EV charger or solar-related quote.

Is a switchboard with ceramic fuses illegal?

Not illegal to have, but it does not meet current standards and gives no protection against electric shock. Any new circuit added to it must have RCD protection, which usually means upgrading the board anyway.
