Replacing an existing fan or light
If a room already has a fan, or a central light fitting, a new fan is usually a straightforward swap. We check that the mounting point in the ceiling is rated to carry a fan, not just a light, because a fan puts a moving load on the fixing and a light bracket is not designed for that. Then it is a matter of hanging the fan, balancing it, and connecting the control you have chosen.
Adding a fan where there is no point
Rooms with no ceiling fitting at all need a new cable run from a nearby circuit or the switchboard, a properly fixed mounting block in the ceiling, and a switch or remote. In a house with roof access this is usually done in a morning. Two-storey homes or rooms with no roof space above take longer, and we will say so when we quote.
Choose the control before we come: a wall control with separate fan and light switching is the most reliable; a remote is convenient but is one more thing to lose down the side of the couch.
Choosing the right fan
Blade size should match the room: around 120 cm for a bedroom, 130 to 140 cm for a living area. DC motor fans are quieter and use less power than AC, and most have a reverse (winter) mode that pushes warm air back down from the ceiling, which makes them useful year-round. For alfresco areas and patios, the fan must be outdoor rated or it will not last a season.
